Beyond the Page Book Club: Hatchet Novel Study


This seven-week course offers an in-depth exploration of the novel Hatchet by Gary Paulsen, fostering critical thinking, reading comprehension, and writing skills for students in grades 6-8. Classes are Wednesday evenings at 7:30pm, starting March 5th!

Space is limited to 10 students.

What does the course include?

  • 7 weeks of live small group sessions on Zoom with a maximum of 10 students

  • Google Classroom access for weekly writing, vocabulary, and supplemental materials. Please note: families must provide access to the novel via purchase or your local library.

  • During Sessions:

    • Thought-provoking discussion questions

    • Lessons on identifying and using literary elements and devices

    • Engaging activities designed for all learners

  • Outside of Class:

    • Weekly writing assignments (2 required, 5 optional), each receiving detailed teacher feedback

    • Curated vocabulary lists with interactive activities

    • Guided note sheets to enhance reading comprehension

  • Add-on 1:1 sessions available in addition for personalized writing instruction and feedback. These can be scheduled a la carte based on student need or desire.
